Microsoft Edge

I just use my Desktop PC to go on the web. I use Microsoft Edge.

In recent years, when someone sends me a physical letter with a website to pay a bill or whatever, at least in edge it seems I'm no longer permitted to simply type the address in, press enter, and for it to load up. Inevitably it performs a search instead, a bing search by default though I can change this default to Google etc. Why are people no longer permitted to simply enter an address and go to it nowadays? It seems to do the same on mobiles too (though I'm unfamiliar with using mobiles to go on the web).

When someone sends me a bill, I really need to go to the precise site they specify, not to another site, possibly even a scammer's site or whatever. If it performs a search instead then I have to laboriously check that it's the right site, and if it isn't, I can't change it anyway!

Yet further evidence of the enshitification of the net? I note that Firefox works in this regard. I might just switch back over to Firefox. Firefox also enables me to open tabs in a new tab without hijacking my existing tab (by typing "about:config" into the browser's address bar and hitting Enter, and it's some settings in there).
